What To Do In A Dental Emergency
For A Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth:
- Find the tooth. Hold it by the crown (the chewing part), not the root.
- If possible, gently put it back into the socket. Have your child bite down gently on gauze or a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- If putting it back isn’t possible, place the tooth in a sealed container filled with milk. Do NOT place in water.
- Time is critical! Get to our office immediately.
For A Chipped or Broken Tooth:
- Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water.
- If there’s bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean piece of gauze.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth/cheek to reduce swelling.
- Collect any tooth fragments if possible.
For A Severe Toothache/Swelling:
- Rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water.
- Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove any lodged food particles.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
- Administer age-appropriate over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., children’s ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed on the label. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums.
For Bleeding From Your Child’s Mouth:
- Apply firm, but gentle, pressure to the area with a clean piece of gauze or cloth for 10-15 minutes.
- If the bleeding doesn’t stop, continue pressure and call us.
